prāyeṇābhyarcito devo
ye ’prajā gṛha-medhinaḥ
kad-apatya-bhṛtaṁ duḥkhaṁ
ye na vindanti durbharam
prāyeṇa—probablemente; abhyarcitaḥ—fue adorado; devaḥ—el Señor; ye—aquellos que; aprajāḥ—sin hijos; gṛha-medhinaḥ—personas que viven en su hogar; kad-apatya—por un mal hijo; bhṛtam—causada; duḥkham—desdicha; ye—aquellos que; na—no; vindanti—sufrir; durbharam—insoportable.
El rey reflexionaba: En verdad que los que no tienen hijos son muy afortunados. Para no tener que sufrir la insoportable desdicha que supone un mal hijo, en sus vidas pasadas han debido de adorar al Señor.
It is said that a married couple must have a son, otherwise their family life is void. But a son born without good qualities is as good as a blind eye. A blind eye has no use for seeing, but it is simply unbearably painful. The King therefore thought himself very unfortunate to have such a bad son.
